Hi, ich habe nur eines falsch gemacht. Ich bin nämlich nicht, wie Ecki, Mathe- und Sportlehrer geworden. Das sind nämlich die einzigen, die nie Stress haben. Gruß Jens |

A LATE HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!... well, I thought I better get on the computer and write before we hit February 2003! After having been chasing Frodo and his friends all around New Zealand, we finally arrived in Australia on the 4th of January, hanging out with friends and enjoying family life since most of them did not know how to use contraceptives and therefore produced sweet little monsters! Since I got a bit slack with the travel reports while touring NZ (there was just toooooo much to see and to do!) I try to sum up the 2 months New Zealand experience as briefly as possible. We flew into Auckland, hung around there for 5 days till we found our luxury NZ-touring-VAN!!! (Daihatsu Hijet...sounds like a space ship but was more like a tiny tin box - not exactly the model we had been looking for, but it took us around NZ allright and once we had worked out all the tricks it had been playing on us (we assume this car just wanted us to make heaps of new "friends" helping to push-start it) it was doing a great job all the 8000 kms and helped us save a fair amount of money since we slept in it almost every night. THE NORTH ISLAND...a bit cold to start with but evne though most people prefer the south island, we really loved it. The highlights were definitely WAIPU and the Ebb&Flow Backpackers north of Auckland where we spent NEW YEARS EVE - even in the busy season it is pretty deserted there and the beach is superb! THE COROMANDEL - lots of great beaches, some of them only to be reached on a dirt road but our "4-wheel-drive" took as everywhere without any problems. The area around ROTORUA - amazing with all the hot bubbly thermal activities, especially WAI-O-TAPU (DO NOT miss out on this huge thermal park if you visit NZ - the colours are fantastic on a sunny day! TONGARIRO - the 7-hour Tongariro Crossing is a MUST SEE & DO in sunny weather! It is quite a long walk but worth the "pain"! In a snowstorm...well, lets call it a "smelly" adventure, as we couldn't see a thing but smell the sulphur lakes. That is why we decided to do the walk again a few weeks later. The landscape around the volcanoes is wicked! Check out the pictures!!! Oli hiked up to the crater of Mount Ruapehu while I went snowboarding and this must be another stunnig place to see. THE SOUTH ISLAND...expensive to get there ( the cheapest ferry is STRAiT SHIPPING which cost 190, NZ$ for the two of us and the car). Anyway, afer a rough 4-hour-ferry ride and a weight loss of at least 1 kilo because of being sea-sick, we arrived in Picton, took the scenic road along the Marlborough Sound to Nelson, booked the ABEL TASMAN TRACK - 2 1/2 in the kayak and the rest of the track we walked, up and down the hill, along the beach, ...alltogether 5 beautiful days. THE NELSON LAKES - we did a 2 day hike there along Robert ridge to Angelus Hut - fantastic, majestic scenery! From there we drove down the west coast where everyone told us how beautiful it is...unfortunately, we did not get to see it because the weather was shocking - rain and fog, so that we could not even see the ocean from the cliffs. We hung out at a lovely backpackers place in FRANZ JOSEF (the Glowworm Cottage) which is famous for its superb glacier views from the spa, but... after 4 days it finally cleared up and we did get to see the alpine scenery -very impressive. Of course we did the forbidden thing (and thanks to God my parents do not speak any English so they won't get this) as we decided not to pay any money for a guided tour up the glacier and just took off on our own...where told off by some tour guides who saw us but that did not spoil the fun. Okay...over the Haast Pass to Wanaka, then to Queenstown, all the way down to the Milford Sound where Japanese tourists ask all these funny questions such as "Who designed all this?" How long did it take to build it?" "When do they let the dolphins out?" etc. Pretty funny these Japanese! And the MILFORD SOUND...WOW!!! Back in the car to the East Coast - DUNEDIN and the OTAGO PENINSULA - all worth seeing, especially the ALbatross flying! Another MUST is to go on JIM's yellow-eyed-penguin tour in OAMARU - it is not advertised but guaranteed the best and the cheapest penguin tour by a man who knows everything about his little friends! On the way up the east coast we took the detour via MOUNT COOK and LAKE TEKAPO - if you happen to have good weather, don't miss out on it! Only a short walk up the Hooker Valley takes you to great mountain views! Christchurch - definitely nicer then Auckland! The botanical gardens are quite impressive but another great stop on the coast is KAIKOURA - unfortunately we did not have more then 2 days there! A very nice coastal walk, seals, whales, dolphins... all in all NEW ZEALAND is an awesome place to visit except for the sandflies - they are a pain in the B...!! AUSTRALIA so far.... HOT!!! More when I am willing to write more! Oli can't be bothered I reckon! |
